2023 GoodSpark Grant Recipient
Empress Acres was one of 150 small businesses selected across Canada to receive a Desjardins Good Spark Grant of $20,000 from the Canadian company, Desjardins.
This grant will allow us to install a walk-in cooler and construct a kitchen area to clean all the eggs and produce that we harvest to sell locally.
This is an important step as we transition 65 acres of marginally used or unused farmland into land that is growing healthy, delicious and nutritious food for local consumption.

Who We Are
About Empress Acres
Nanaimo Association for Community Living (NACL) purchased Empress Acres at the end of February 2026, thrilled to carry on the legacy of its most recent owners, Marlene and Peter Lewis. NACL is an accredited non-profit organization providing programs and services to people ages six and up with developmental disabilities since July 22, 1986.
Empress Acres supports many of NACL’s strategic objectives including sustainability, employment, educational, housing, and community inclusion opportunities for those we serve, plus engage our community beyond. To learn more about NACL, please also visit our website at www.nanaimoacl.com.
Back in 2017 the Lewises began growing the very unique Empress tree, becoming a key piece of the property’s identity and by extension, its name. Empress trees are a source of sustainable lumber while offsetting our overall carbon footprint. Empress Acres has the proud distinction of being the first Empress tree farm in Canada.
We are excited to share Empress Acres with the community, whether it be through the production of healthy, local food grown there (or at our original farm, Evanmorr Acres), as a future agritourism hub and recreation therapy space, and also as an event space for everything from meetings to weddings within the beautiful setting of the Empress trees.

Where We Are
Finding The Farm
Conveniently located minutes off Highway #1 on Vancouver Island. This quiet, 69-acre farm is six-minutes to the Nanaimo Airport, 13 minutes to the Duke Point Ferry, 19 min. to Departure/Horseshoe Bay ferries, and 16 min. drive to Harbour Air (water airport travelling from Nanaimo to Vancouver, Victoria, and seven other destinations).
Coming from the south, Empress Acres is only five minutes off the #1 highway after the Nanaimo Airport, on the Haslam Road exit. The length of the property runs east to west. Beautiful scenic mountain views are to the south and southwest.
